Film: “In Football We Trust”
To celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we are happy to show a special screening of “In Football We Trust.” This documentary film explores a group of young Polynesian men in Salt Lake City, Utah, who strive to overcome gang violence and poverty to achieve their dreams of becoming football players in the American NFL. It is a little-known phenomenon that Polynesians in particular are 28 times more likely than any other ethnic group to make it to the NFL. As a result, many Polynesian families in the U.S. have come to view football as their ticket out of economic hardship and gang life – but then encounter a rude awakening when they enter the world of football. Directed by Tony Vainuku and co-directed by Erika Cohn.
The rights to screen these films are generously provided byAmerican Film Showcase, a program to bring award-winning contemporary American documentaries, feature films and animated shorts to audiences around the world, offering a view of American society and culture as seen by independent filmmakers. Funded by a grant from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, the Showcase highlights the value of film in fostering understanding and cooperation, dialogue and debate.
