American Independent Comics Workshop

American Center in Moscow is glad to host two profound American Comics artists, Lale Westvind and Thomas Lampion, with a 3-day American Independent Comics Workshop on March 25 – March 27 and invites comics artists and illustrators older 18 to join a series of hands-on masterclasses from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
During the workshop, you will have a chance to apply the acquired skills in practice to create your own comics in English, that will be further exhibited at the American Center. Two first working days will be followed up by an open lecture with the artist. Please, note, that if you are applying for this program you should be able to attend all the 3 days of masterclasses, work at home and provide practical result in the end.
Lale Westvind is a multi-disciplinary artist working primarily in comics and animation in Philadelphia. Her animation work has shown internationally at festivals, galleries and the New Museum in New York City. Lale Westvind is currently teaching in the illustration department at Parsons School of Design. During the workshop, Lale will share her expertise on drawing motion and dynamic scenes.
Philadelphian Comics artist, the author of “Mothers Tales” (a collection of Appalachian ghost stories) and “Diary Comics” (an autobiographical comics). In his artworks, Thomas is specifically interested in Ghost stories, folklore and family histories. During the workshop, Thomas will teach how to find comics ideas in daily routine and create comics diaries.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

March 25, Monday. Day 1

3 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

This day you will spend with Tomas Lampion, getting to know each other, share experience of finding ideas for comics and getting day-to-day inspiration. You will be sketching for Comics ideas and discuss Thomas’s Diary Comics.

Day 1 result: Participants formulate their future comics’ idea.

6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Thomas Lampion. Lecture: “Comics Diaries and Mother Tales”

March 26, Tuesday. Day 2

3 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

This day you will spend with Lale Westvind and learn about comics structure and composition. She will also share insights on drawing dynamic energy.

Day 2 result: you will develop particular comics scenes that would contain action and dynamics.

6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

March 26, Wednesday. Day 3

3 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

During this day you will be drawing and receiving hands-on consultations from Lale and Thomas.

6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Artworks’ showcase, discussing the results, networking.
