The American Center in Moscow together with Funky Chekhov’s Society presents a flash fiction contest “Good Night, Moscow*”. We are encouraging our patrons to spend 4 weeks in December 2020 – January 2021 creating a short fiction story (500 words maximum) in English to express their feelings to the capital of Russia (or any other city you have a strong emotional connection with).

Contest task: Write a short fiction story (up to 500 words) themed “Good Night, Moscow”.

Your stories should be in English.

Length of the entries: In this contest you will need to write a flash fiction piece. It means that it should be no longer than 500 words (the maximum word count is 500 words). It is a classic flash fiction literary category.

*Topic of the entries: As the title of the contest, “Good night, Moscow”, suggests, your contest entry can be about Moscow. However, you don’t have to write about Moscow – you can choose any other city, town, or village that you have a strong connection with. You can pick any genre – drama, comedy, horror, science fiction etc. to express your feelings and ideas. You can leave the original title (“Good night, Moscow”) or choose your own, but your new title must be connected with the main theme. Your short story should also be of your own creation (not borrowed or translated from any other work).

Example: Here is an example of the winner of a similar contest where main protagonists were New York City and its famous skyscrapers: Read more…

The contest “Good night, Moscow” runs from December 16, 2020 to January 16, 2021. Deadline for submissions is 23:59 on January 16, 2021.
Prizes will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • creativity
  • style
  • language
  • expression

Winners will be announced in early February 2021. We may also pick a few Honorable Mentions—the final number will depend on the number of entries received. Winners will be announced on the American Center in Moscow’s and Funky Chekhov’s Society’s social media pages and notified via email that they specified in their submission.

Winners will be awarded prizes and their work will be published in the American Center in Moscow’s and Funky Chekhov’s Society’s social media pages.

Fine Print: You can enter as many stories as you like, but you can win only one prize. By entering the contest, you certify that your story is your own original creation. Stories that are plagiarized will be disqualified from the contest. All decisions as to winners are made by the American Center in Moscow staff and guest judges, and all decisions are final.
