American physician and comedian Patch Adams will join Russian charity Maria’s Children founder Maria Eliseeva to discuss their 2 ½-decade collaboration in Russia to benefit children in need. The two have collaborated annually in organizing groups of Americans, Russians, and volunteers from around the world to visit and bring joy to children, the elderly, and those in need in orphanages, hospitals, homeless shelters, and homes for the elderly.
Patch Adams is an American physician, comedian, social activist, and clown whose life mission is to be an instrument for peace, justice, and care. In 1971, he founded the Gesundheit! Institute, which served as a communal hospital model. Dr. Adams’s work with the Institute evolved into global speaking, during which 200-300 days of the year he has been on the road, sharing his message about communal hospital care. In 1985, Dr. Adams first visited the Soviet Union on a clown trip to visit hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the elderly. He has returned to Russia every year since, and additionally has organized volunteers from the United States and around the world to travel to 6-7 other countries each year to bring humor to orphans, patients, the elderly, and others in need of comfort.
Maria Eliseeva is a Russian social activist and founder and director of the organization Maria’s Children. She opened the Maria’s Children Arts Center in 1997, where she directs art programs for children from residential schools and orphanages to work together and to benefit from the communal process of creating art together. The center promotes children’s social, psychological, and intellectual rehabilitation through various creative activities, camps, and trainings.
