AMC Online | Meet a Poet: Jeffrey Cyphers Wright

Jeffrey Cyphers Wright is best known as a New Romantic poet. He is also a publisher, critic, eco-activist, impresario, filmmaker, puppeteer, and artist. He received his MFA after studying with Allen Ginsberg at Brooklyn college where Wright also taught. He has read his work at the Museum of Modern Art, the Roxy nightclub in Amsterdam, and at the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church where Wright was on the Board of Directors for several years.

Wright is the author of nineteen books of verse, including Blue Lyre and Party Everywhere. His poems have appeared in various journals including The Café Review, New American Writing, The Brooklyn Rail, The Hurricane Review, and Posit among others. Recent work also appears in the anthologies Best American Poetry; NYC Insiders; and Contemporary Surrealist and Magical Realist Poetry.  His latest work, a book of sonnets and artwork called Doppelgängster is from MadHat Press. 

For many years, Wright published Cover Magazine, which covered all the arts. Now he publishes a poetry and arts journal called Live Mag! He is a Kathy Acker Award recipient for both writing and publishing. He has been an artist-in-residence at Howl! Happening, and at eMediaLoft.
