AMC Online: "Polar Bears on Wrangel Island: Collaborative Research at the Far End of the Earth"
Polar bears in the Chukchi Sea move between the U.S. and Russia, representing a truly shared natural resource. As the “ecological heart” of the region, Wrangel Island, Russia provides critical habitat for bears, walrus, migratory birds, and many other species.
Dr. Eric Regehr is a Principal Quantitative Ecologist at the University of Washington’s Polar Science Center. He has spent nearly 20 years studying terrestrial and marine wildlife, with a focus on polar bears. Eric led the first analyses showing negative effects of sea-ice loss on polar bear survival and has worked on 10 of the world’s 19 polar bear populations. His current work is focused on understanding the interactive effects of harvest and climate change. Eric is the Principal Investigator on American-Russian polar bear studies on Wrangel Island and works closely with scientists, managers, and hunters across the Arctic.
