Join us for online conversations with American guest speakers in a new edition of Shop Talks moderated by filmmaker Michael Beckelhimer —a series of biweekly virtual meetings with American cultural performers and experts.

The guest speaker of the Shop Talk on June 23 at 5:00 PM MSK is Dr. Frederick H. White. He will talk about Russian film director Aleksei Balabanov and his films.

Dr. Frederick H. White is Professor of Russian and Integrated Studies at Utah Valley University (UVU). He has published eight books and over forty-five academic articles on Russian literature, film and culture. He is one of the leading specialists on the writer Leonid Andreev and has published in the areas of Russian Modernism, psychiatry and literature in the Russian fin de siècle, the economics of culture and post-Soviet cinema, with a specific focus on the filmmaker Aleksei Balabanov. His current research project is titled Ernest Hemingway in the Soviet Union. Dr. White teaches Russian language, literature, film and culture courses for the UVU Russian program.

Michael Beckelhimer is a freelance writer/producer and documentary filmmaker. He is the director and producer of the documentary film, “Pushkin is Our Everything”. He got his B.A. in Russian at American University, and an M.A. in Russian at Harvard. He lived in Moscow and Tallinn before, during, and after the fall of the Soviet Union.
