AMC Online | Teacher2Teacher Workshop: Helping students increase cognitive potential using Social and Emotional learning

We are excited to announce a new series of Teacher2Teacher Workshops for English-language teachers from all across Russia. Taught by the English Language Office’s English Language Fellow  Heather Denton, these biweekly meetings will be a great opportunity for English teachers to get hands-on advice about various aspects of foreign language instruction, share successful practices, resources, innovative pedagogies, and work on their professional development together with like-minded colleagues.

These workshops are free and will take place online via Zoom. They are intended for teachers of English teaching in various educational contexts, as well as teacher-trainers and students pursuing a degree in teaching English.

We invite you to join the first workshop on March 17 at 5 pm (MSK). The topic of this workshop is «Helping students increase cognitive potential using Social and Emotional learning«.  

Research shows that SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) not only improves achievement by an average of 11 percentile points, but it also increases prosocial behaviors (such as kindness, sharing, and empathy), improves student attitudes toward school, and reduces depression and stress among students (Durlak et al., 2011). However, for a variety of reasons, «soft skills» such as self-regulating, relationship competence and decision making are not explicitly taught in schools.  Using a framework that acknowledges cognitive development, teachers will be exposed to ways to help children manage themselves, recognize their emotions and name them to facilitate regulation and to inform decision making, understand the perspectives of others and relate effectively with them as well as making careful personal and social decisions.

About the instructor: Heather Denton is Experienced language educator, Master of Arts in teaching foreign language with certification and licensure through State of Oregon in K-12 ESOL and bilingual education, 15 years working in diverse language acquisition environments in both public schools and internationally.
