AMC Online | Vincent Soboleff Alaska photography
To mark the UN International Day of Living Together in Peace, we announce a special discussion about the Russian-American photographer Vincent Soboleff, whose photography portrayed the native Alaskan people, the Russian Creoles, and Euro-Americans who lived and worked together in Killisnoo and Angoon, Alaska, in the late 19th and early 20thcenturies. The discussion with ethnologist and Dartmouth University professor Sergei Kan will take place Monday, May 17, at 18:30 on the Facebook pages of the U.S. Embassy and American Center in Moscow.
The photographs, taken between 1890 and 1920, portray the integrated multiethnic society of the remote coastal Alaskan town of Kilisnoo and the native Tlingit village of Angoon, providing beautiful and intimate glimpses into the lives of the people of the region and the landscape of Alaska. Dr. Kan will speak about the photographs, as well as his ethnographic fieldwork and archival research in this Alaskan region, in a discussion about the peaceful interface of the Tlingit, Russian, and American cultures.
