Discussion Club: USA and Russia – Different or Alike?

Welcome to a series of weekly meetings where we will discuss similarities and differences between Russian and American societies, cultures, moral values, and norms. Engaged in discussing fascinating and complex topics, you will practice your English, get a better understanding of the United States, and engage in critical thinking and open debate much valued in U.S. academia.

Language requirements: Recommended minimum level of English is Intermediate.

This week we will talk about consumerism in the US. It’s Christmas time and Americans become almost obsessed with presents and Christmas decorations. They spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year on holidays gifts and celebrations. But it’s not just those: a typical American would rather buy something new than fix the old. What does it say about the US and what can we say about Russia in this regard?

Led by Nikolai Rubanovsky and Alina Korshunova.

Nikolai Rubanovsky is a press analyst at European Union Delegation to Russia and a Fulbright Alumnus. Nikolai holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Lobachevsky State University of Nizhniy Novgorod and a master’s degree in Communication and International Development from Ohio University. He hosts a podcast series discussing American and Russian societal differences, has organized several lecture series and community development projects in the US.

Alina Korshunova is American Center in Moscow Coordinator and a Fulbright Alumna. Alina holds a bachelor’s degree in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics from Pyatigorsk State University and a master’s degree in Linguistics from Eastern Michigan University.
