American Center at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow joins the World Health Organization initiative of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.

25 November was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.  The 16 Days of Activism end on 10 December — International Human Rights Day.

Today American Center will screen the film «NETIZENS» by Cynthia Lowen, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and writer.  NETIZENS delves into the lives of three women whose lives have been transformed by online harassment. Carrie Goldberg is an attorney in New York City, who launches an internet privacy and sexual assault law firm in the wake of her own cyber harassment. Tina Reine, in West Palm Beach, is a successful businesswoman whose career is derailed after an ex-boyfriend creates numerous reputation-harming websites. San Francisco-based Anita Sarkeesian is the creator of a popular web- series, “Feminist Frequency,” critiquing representations of women in video games, who is the target of a cyber-mob’s ongoing campaign of rape and death threats. Through an intimate, vérité approach, NETIZENS depicts the many forms digital abuse can take: non-consensual pornography, cyber-stalking, threats of violence, privacy invasions, impersonation, character attacks, and bears witness as a courageous wave of individuals transform the web as we know it.

The representative of the World Health Organization will join our discussion after the film tonight.

The rights to screen these films are generously provided by American Film Showcase, a program to bring award-winning contemporary American documentaries, feature films and animated shorts to audiences around the world, offering a view of American society and culture as seen by independent filmmakers. Funded by a grant from the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, the Showcase highlights the value of film in fostering understanding and cooperation, dialogue and debate.
