In this interactive session, David will discuss how he balances the dual roles of critic and artist in the theatre world. He will offer insights from his extensive experience in writing companion books for Broadway hits such as «Moulin Rouge! The Musical,» «Wicked,» «Jersey Boys,» and «Spring Awakening.» His writings have also graced the pages of well-known publications such as Opera News, The Village Voice, The Guardian, and The New York Times.

About Our Speaker:

David Cote is a distinguished librettist, playwright, and critic residing in New York City. Currently, he’s working on three new operas covering a diverse range of topics, from the artistry and activism of Paul Robeson to music therapy and memory, and the issue of climate change. His notable previous operas include «Blind Injustice» (2019) for Cincinnati Opera and «Three Way» (2017) at Nashville Opera and BAM. David’s plays «The Müch,» «Saint Joe,» and «Otherland» were shortlisted for the O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference. As a journalist, David has served as the longest-standing theater editor and chief drama critic of Time Out New York.
