BOOK SPINE POETRY CONTEST

Everybody’s favorite excuse to speak in rhyming couplets is upon us — National Poetry Month. The American Center in Moscow is celebrating it with a Book Spine Poetry Contest. We are encouraging our patrons to spend the month of April combing through their bookshelves for the most interesting titles to create their own book spine poetry and submit it to us.

ЧТО ТАКОЕ BOOK SPINE POETRY?
Book Spine Poetry is a kind of free verse poetry that you don’t really write from scratch – instead, you “find” it by arranging book titles to make a poem. This type of poem can be serious or funny — the possibilities are endless, just like in regular poetry.

Examples of Book Spine Poetry can be found here, and here are some of the examples we have come up with: examples in VKONTAKTE.

Here’s how you can compose a Book Spine Poem:

  • grab a bunch of books with interesting titles written on their spines;
  • stack the books on top of one another to create a column of free verse poetry;
  • take a photo of your poem and share it with us!
CONTEST DETAILS:
The contest runs throughout National Poetry Month — from April 3, 2020 to April 30, 2020. Deadline for submissions is 23:59 on April 30, 2020.
Book Spine Poems in Russian and in English can be submitted.
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Book Spine Poems in Russian
  • Book Spine Poems in English

Winners will be announced in May 2020. We may also pick a few Honorable Mentions—the final number will depend on the number of entries received. Winners in each category will be awarded prizes.
